Ingredient Spotlight - Hyaluronic Acid

The hype of Hyaluronic Acid doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime too soon. So, we wanted to put the spotlight on this popular beauty ingredient.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) (Sodium Hyaluronate) is one of the most popular ingredients within skincare products, with a huge following. The hype doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime too soon.

We see this ingredient in a range of beauty products, predominantly retail beauty lines such as face masks, creams, serums and much more. We know it does good things for our skin, yet what exactly, and how do we leverage this to our advantage as beauty therapists?

What is it exactly?

Well, in essence, it is a moisture retaining substance that holds phenomenal amounts of water and is organically part of our DNA. Hyaluronic Acid keeps our skin, eyes and joints lubricated, hydrated and cushioned. As our body ages, the amount of HA produced in our body begins to lessen, and so, the visible signs of ageing begin to take over, faster than natural HA can keep up with. This also happens with natural forms of collagen and elastin.

What does it do?

This main ingredient acts as an amazing skin rejuvenation enhancer and is idea for everyday use. Perfect for those who do not want to opt for injectable HA or dermal fillers yet can be used in conjunction with depending on the requirement and intended result.

Hyaluronic Acid in topical beauty products is formulated for just that. Topical treatments with amazing benefits including maximised hydrating results, dewy and plumper looking skin.

HA in beauty products is safe to use for almost all skin types, as it generally cannot penetrate more than the first layer of skin. That all depends on the size of the HA molecules. Without getting too technical and scientific, it is a fantastic addition to skincare, as it does provide effective results, just not as effective and distinct as the injectable type.

Where does this fit in to my beauty treatments?

If you are a facial therapist, this can be a stunning tool for fresh, hydrated and radiant skin, and sure to please with the end result. You can beautifully and easily educate your client into considering products with HA for their daily maintenance regimes. This is great in boosting your retail sales, and for positive and useful reasons. After all, your client does come to you as a solution to their beauty concerns. A great retail range featuring HA would be ideal for the upkeep in between visits. Plus, your client will thank you for it!
